The names of individuals interviewed for the Jewish Heritage Project are listed in the catalog below. Interviews were recorded on digital or analog audiotape and averaged ninety minutes in duration. A few sessions were video taped. The recordings contain first-person accounts useful to historians, ethnographers, and genealogists, and of special interest to family members.

All tapes in the Jewish Heritage Collection can be listened to at the College of Charleston library. As interviews are transcribed, edited, and approved by the interviewees, more material will become available. You can search for interviews either by name (below) or by place.

      Mr. Addlestone describes his parents’ migration from Eastern Europe to England and then to Charleston; his father’s initial business forays in Charleston (peddling, running a grocery, dabbling in scrap metal) before moving to Berkeley County—a hot bed of bootlegging—to run a lumber-company commissary. Moving to Sumter in 1931, the family establishes a scrap metal business that becomes very successful. Mr. Addlestone discusses the scrap metal industry in the U.S. and Jewish involvement in it.
